Marriage Licence Allegations

Marriage bonds, allegations or licences may hold more information about a couple than appears in the marriage register. Couples chose to marry by licence for reasons of speed or privacy (no reading of banns in church on three successive weeks), choice of church, or simply to bestow some sort of prestige (as a fee was payable). Allegations were sworn before either the Bishop or his surrogate, in order to obtain a licence which the couple had to present to the minister who married them. Here are details from some of the licence allegations we have found in the collection at Gloucestershire Archives, along with the marriage date and place (interestingly in some instances not the place specified in the allegation).
